What a great week coming up !

This year’s Lucerne School and Community Writers Festival is from Monday May 7 to Friday May 11 and will end with a final coffeehouse on Friday night at the Silverton Gallery at 6:30 pm. It promises to be an amazing amalgam of writers, artists and even Thespians.

Our 11th annual Writers Festival kicks off on Monday with a visit from renowned illustrator, George Littlechild who is in the school district at various schools throughout the week. George will read from a number of his books and teach the students a bit about a career as an artist and illustrator.www.georgelittlechild.com

This year, we welcome back Stuart Ross http://bloggamooga.blogspot.ca/ who calls New Denver home a lot and plans to launch his latest book while he is in town. Stu is working with both elementary and high school students this year. He’ll be inspiring the youngers with writing poetry and has paired up with local artist and teacher, Donna Hicks in a four day “Painting, Paddling and Poetry” workshop integrating writing, watercolour painting and getting out on beautiful Slocan Lake to find one’s literary and artistic muse.

Mat Maitlandt of Calgary Young People’s Theatre fame and his theatre partner, Jessica Robertshaw, http://valhallafinearts.org/vista/faculty.html also join us for the week. Working with primarily secondary students, Mat and the young Thespians will write a play in four days, acting and performing this brilliant work at the Friday May 11 coffeehouse. Mat and Jess have also some time scheduled with Lucerne’s elementary classes and will do improv with the entire high school too. Mat’s been doing theatre in the Kootenays each summer with the Valhalla Fine Arts Society’s summer theatre school so this is a special treat!

Locals Christopher and Anastasia Love are another highlight of the week for the K-7 students. The pair will combine art and writing as they work throughout the week with each of the elementary classes. Knowing how popular Anastasia and Christopher’s art classes have become, this promises to be a great creative time for all.

Come join us at the school or at the coffeehouse on Friday night. Students from K-12 will perform their stunning work and special guest writers will wow you with their words. There will be a bake sale to fundraise for the week and if any parents can make a baking contribution towards this please let us know.
