September 2012 Newsletter

Principal’s Greeting

Every school year starts off with a sense of anticipation. Children feel a year older and wiser and look forward to having a different place and role to play in a new grade. Teachers have spent the summer gaining inspiration from reading, from travelling, from attending conferences and having time to think outside their regular schedule. On August 29th the entire staff of School District 10 met in Burton to collaborate on innovative projects that will enrich the learning of their students. As the year unfolds our students will be encouraged to follow suit, taking more independence in their learning but having opportunities to collaborate with each other – all recognized as excellent practice in British Columbia.

 Staff News for 2012-2013

During the summer holiday, Craig Besinque our bus driver, made the decision to retire. Craig has driven bus for our students for many years and has provided children with a welcome every school morning and a safe ride home. Have a great retirement, Craig!

We welcome our new English teacher, Ms Lauren Smith, who joins us from Nelson. Ms Smith is a keen outdoor environmentalist and is passionate about student learning. Ms Smith will teach the English 7/8 class, the English 9 class and elementary classes for the teachers’ prep blocks.

Terry Taylor, who last year became a district principal, continues her English and Writing classes with us but has decided to drop counseling from her huge portfolio. At the time of writing this newsletter, we are in the process of finding a replacement.

New Student Handbook

All students in Grades 4-12 this week will have been a student handbook that details for them a whole host of information about how our school runs. Kindergarten to Grade 3 students will have one copy per family. Parents and guardians should also read through the booklet as it includes a list of events for the school year, details on assessment practice and what to do if a student is absent. Another great source of information about what happens at Lucerne is the website; the calendar is always kept up to date.

 Terry Fox Run

September always sees our students running for Terry Fox’s Foundation, raising money for cancer research. Elementary teachers are sending home fundraising envelopes and secondary students can pick envelopes up from the office. All students will take part in the run during all-school fitness on Friday, September 28th at 1.15pm.

 Welcome Back to School BBQ

Please come along and meet our staff on Thursday, September 6th between 5 and 7pm in the school garden for a welcome back to school barbeque. This is a great opportunity to meet your child’s elementary home room teacher or secondary school teachers and ask questions about the courses ahead.

 Kindergarten Students

Welcome to Liam, Ayla, Jiro, Olivia, Riley, Elvin, Galena, Petula, Olivia, Hunter and Anatoli who start school in Ms Chamapgne’s class on Tuesday. During the first two weeks of school the Kindergarten students will come to school for mornings only until 12.12pm.

 PAC Meeting

The first PAC meeting is scheduled already and is on Wednesday, 19th September at 4.30pm. All parents and guardians are members of PAC and are welcome to attend the meeting. The AGM will be in October when a new executive is elected.

 Booking School Facilities

Please visit the school office to collect a school rental form if your organization wishes to use a room in the building and complete the form ahead of time. Rental can only happen after hours and depending on the nature of your group there may be a small fee. Youth groups and educational groups are usually free. Using the school outside the regular hours of our custodian is more costly as it means that an extra custodian needs to be hired therefore it is best to try to hold your event during his regular hours.

 Visitors to School

All visitors must enter the school building through the main entrance and report to the school office during school hours. This does include parents and guardians. At the end of the day elementary parents are welcome to use the main entrance or the entrance leading on to the school field and wait in the carpeted area for their children.

 And finally…

…congratulations to Mr Parkstrom’s Social Studies 11 class who achieved outstanding exam and final marks in June exam compared to the provincial average.
