May’s Newsletter

May 2011 Newsletter

Principal’s Greeting

It is with sadness that I write the newsletter today.  Randy Duncan, who graduated from Lucerne in 2007, was killed in a traffic accident on April 28th.  My colleagues who worked with Randy have had only good things to say about Randy – that he was a delightful person to know and to have had the privilege of teaching. Many of our students knew Randy personally and are deeply saddened today. We send our love to Randy’s family and wish them to know that he has a special place in everyone’s hearts at Lucerne.

PAC meeting

The next PAC meeting is on Tuesday May 3rd at 6.40pm. All parents are members of PAC and therefore are more than welcome to come along and input into these meetings.

Grad Meeting

The next Grad Meeting for Grade 12 and their parents is on Wednesday May 18th at 6.30pm. At the meeting we will plan who will help with various set ups and set downs for the banquet and ceremony. There will also be a gym decoration meeting on Tuesday 31st May with the Grad Ceremony Rehearsal at 9am on Wednesday June 1st.

Visiting Performances

May sees two sets of performers coming to Lucerne. On Thursday May 5th starting at 9.30am the Beattie School of the Arts from Kamloops, a K-12 school, will bring their students to entertain us with jazz choir, band and modern (lyrical and hip hop) dance. On Tuesday 17th May at 1.30pm Ache Brasil who fuse music, dance, and the martial art of Capoeira into a dynamic, colourful and  high energy performance that has toured across Canada and the US will be with us.  All are welcome to watch these colourful performances.

Punctuality Rocks

For the month of April the two students whose names have been pulled out of the draw for rewarding students who attend school every day and are on time to their lessons are  Jude-Nicholson Chodat and Michelle Magnuson.

Experience Selkirk College

Grades 10 and 11 are heading to Nelson and Trail on Thursday, May 5th to investigate the courses available at Selkirk and begin to appreciate the requirements for entrance to post-secondary education.

Spring into Learning Week

Secondary students head off to their second week of immersion electives. Ric Bardarti is leading a group of kayakers- canoers from New Denver to Slocan, Scott Kipkie takes a group rock climbing indoors in Nelson and at the Slocan Bluffs, Terry Taylor and Patti Sebben cook up a feast of ‘Just Desserts’ with students and Gary Parkstrom leads a group of photographers to Nelson and then the dark room. All this takes place between May 10th and May 13th.

School closure days

School is closed on Victoria Day, May 23rd for everyone and also on Tuesday, May 24th for students, as staff are involved in a District Professional Development Day.

And finally…

The theme for Grad 2011 is ‘Reach for the Stars.’ If anyone has any decorations with a space theme we would love to borrow them to help decorate the gym for the ceremony. A space suit would be perfect!
