Principal’s Greeting
For September 2013 Lucerne Elementary Secondary School will have a new principal. I will be transferring to Nakusp Secondary School to try to step into Susan Paterson’s shoes; Mrs Paterson will be moving to Nakusp Elementary School. It has been an action-packed four years for me at Lucerne and I will be taking with me all that I have learnt from my colleagues, parents and students to my new school. Each of our chapters in life teaches us something new and I have learnt how to value the strengths of a small community. Naksup Secondary School will be a return for me to a secondary school where I started off my teaching career in public schools in 1992.
Over the next few months staff and parents will be involved in the process of hiring a new principal for the school and I very much look forward to the conversations about finding the person to lead the school in an exciting era of change for public education in BC.
PAC Meeting
April’s meeting will be on Thursday, April 4th at 6.30pm. Note the different day for this month. PAC is without a secretary at present and would love someone to take on this role.
ArtStarts Performance
The next ArtStarts performance is on Tuesday 23rd April at 9.30am. Silk Road Music is “a harmonious musical tapestry, unconstrained, waiting to be enjoyed! Silk Road Music delivers virtuosity and imagination through thousands of concerts around the world. Formed in Vancouver since 1991, their focus is on linking Chinese music to other cultures. A traditional Chinese Pipa (lute) weaving around a colourful thread of world instruments such as Flamenco guitar, Indian flute, Middle Eastern Oud and world percussion. A musical adventure that explores China and beyond. Silk Road Music is comprised of lute player Qiu Xia He, a former university teacher and performer from China, and Andre Thibault, a multi instrumentalist from Montreal who mesmerizes both audiences and professionals.” All are welcome to attend.
Corazon Performance
The outstanding youth choir returns to New Denver and will perform for the school on Tuesday, April, 16th (time to be confirmed). True to their name, Corazón sings from the heart and has in turn won the hearts of many Canadian audiences in the nine years since it began. This talented and motivated group of young singers from the town of Nelson B.C. has gained a reputation for their blend, intonation and their world music repertoire. Several Lucerne students are members of the choir: Danika Hammond, Margaret Barker, Noah Burkholder, Aja Reinhart, Ali Barker and Sophie Burkholder.
Science Fair and Student Led Conferences
The second student led conferences are scheduled for Thursday, 18th April starting at 1pm. Home room teachers will send home letters inviting parents and guardians to their child’s conference after Spring Break and secondary students’ letters will be mailed home. At the conferences Kindergarten to Grade 8 students will share their science investigations to their guests but from 11.15am -12.15 pm everyone is invited to the Science Fair when students will be ready to present their investigations to a larger audience. There will be early dismissal and the school bus will leave on its regular route at 12.20pm.
Secondary School Planning Session
Towards the end of the student-led conferences secondary staff would like to invite parents of students in Grade 5 and up to take part in a ‘planning together session’ where ideas that we have been working on as a staff team for secondary school program planning for 2013-2014 will be shared and parents will have an opportunity to provide input and thoughts into this process. This will take place from 6.30-7.30pm on Thursday, 18th April.
Writers and Arts Fest / Spring into Learning
This exciting event on the school calendar is scheduled for April 29th– May 3rd. All students will be immersed in a week of either Fine Arts or other secondary elective courses. Stuart Ross and Caroline Woodward return to work with our classes as do Lila Strand and Matt Maitland. There will be a canoeing/kayaking field trip and a small motors workshop too. What an exciting place Lucerne will be! Please come to our annual Writers’ Fest Coffee House scheduled for Friday, May 3rd starting at 6.30pm at Silverton Memorial Hall.
And finally…
…there is no school for students on Friday, April 19th as this is a non-instructional day for staff. Staff will be following a workshop on ‘Conflict Resolution’ in Nakusp for the day.
