According to World Vision, 925 million people go hungry every day, almost 30 times the population of Canada. This year the media has raised our awareness of the drought spreading through the Horn of Africa throughout Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Tanzania. These countries came into my teenage geographical and political awareness in 1984 when Bob Geldof, a Boom Town Rat, visited Ethiopia, saw famine and drought for himself and demanded that the world’s leaders did something about food inequality. Two songs were written by the pop stars of the day, ‘Do they know it’s Christmas?’ by Band Aid and ‘We are the world’ by USA for Africa and they dominated the charts in 1984 and 1985. For my generation the legacy of these songs is a constant awareness that the world is an unequal place and that we should each strive to do more to make it equal. On April 22nd-23rd a number of our secondary students will be taking part in a 30 Hour Famine that will raise money to support World Vision’s fight against global poverty and inequality. Please support any student who asks you for a donation. Their efforts make the words written by Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson for USA for Africa, so true:
“We are the world,
We are the children,
We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let’s start giving”
The next PAC meeting is on Wednesday, April 4th at 4.30pm. The February meeting’s minutes are now posted on the school website.
Celebration of a Love of Reading
Since 2009 Lucerne has benefitted from a ‘Love of Reading’ grant of $20 000 from Indigo Love of Reading Foundation. At least 70% of our Kindergarten to Grade 9 students surveyed in March said they like reading. This is partly because of the great books that we have bought with the grant money for the school and classroom libraries. A big thank you goes to Terry Taylor for administering this grant over the last three years. Thanks also to Chaez Johnsin who has catalogued all of these books. On Monday, 23rd April between 5-6pm join us in the school library to look at the range of books orders and enjoy some refreshments. There will also be a book swap –students can bring from home books they want to swap with someone else. In addition, we are giving away some Classics because they have just got too old to handle in class.
Superintendent/ Secretary-Treasurer News
The Board of Education have appointed Ms Denise Perry to the position of Superintendent/Secretary-Treasurer and she will be starting with us in June 2012. She joins us from SD49 Central Coast where she holds the same position. We look forward to welcoming her here at Lucerne.

The Lucerne Elementary School will be accepting registration for Kindergarten on April 2nd, 2012 – April 13, 2012.
